Welcome

Hello Delegates

In August we head off to balmy Fiji for our combined brand conference at the Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa in Denarau.

The theme of this year’s conference is ‘Ride the Wave’. This symbolises the highs and lows of the business ownership journey. What better way is there to celebrate the peaks and learn ideas to navigate the troughs than being at conference with your peers.

Conference provides an opportunity to network, learn, grow and develop your business so you can become more profitable. And let's not forget about the fun!

See you in Fiji. Ni sa bula,

Grant

Accommodation & Transport

  • If you haven't received your accommodation confirmations from Hilton, make contact with the hotel to avoid issues at check-in. Check-in is from 3pm so if you arrive earlier and your room isn’t quite ready, just complete your registration and leave your luggage with reception. Tip: when it comes to signing for purchases during your stay, it pays to take a photo of the receipt on your phone so you can cross-check against your invoice on check-out.ed by WhatsApp.
  • Transport. It's about a 25-minute drive from the airport to Denarau. On arrival at Nadi Airport, your best option would be to get a taxi to the Hilton. The typical cost is FJ$50. Taxis often don't have meters so best to agree on a price before getting in. Credit cards are not always accepted either, so may be good to take some FJ$$. No tip is expected.

Fijian Phrases

Whilst in Fiji its courteous to try to use some Fijian words. Here are 7 common words to learn before you arrive at Nadi (which is spoken with two n’s i.e. “nandi”) airport.

  • Bula wishes a person good health and happiness. Think of it as equivalent to hello. Ni sa bula is used as either a more formal greeting or as a welcome.
  • Vinaka is the second most common Fijian word you can expect to hear. It means thank you. Fijians are very friendly and helpful, so remember to say vinaka after being served any food, drinks or if someone offers you help. If you are extra grateful for someone’s help or actions, you can use vinaka vaka levu to say thank you very much. Restaurant staff may use vinaka vaka levu to thank you for dining with them, as do retail staff when you have made a purchase
  • Kerekere means please.
  • Moce means goodbye. The ‘c’ in Fijian is pronounced ‘th’ so the correct way to pronounce the Fijian word for goodbye is ‘mothay’.
  • Io means yes. It is pronounced ‘ee-oh’.
  • Sega is no
  • While bula can work at any time of day, yadra is the official Fijian way to greet someone in the morning.

Fijians are normally courteous so making a little effort with the local language is a great way to reciprocate their hospitality.

Sign & Branding Awards

Thank you to everyone who made the effort to submit entries into the 2023 Sign & Branding Awards. With a number of entries to judge, this is certainly not going to be an easy task for our judging panel. We look forward to showcasing the top entries and congratulating all winners at the Awards Gala.

Sponsors

Key suppliers are financially supporting your national conference so please ensure you attend all the events where they will be present. And following conference take the time to thank them for their support.
